As a mom with two little ones under four, life can feel like a whirlwind – diapers, snack requests, naptime battles, and endless to-do lists.
Some days, it’s hard to even catch my breath. But one thing that has been a game-changer for my mental health is bullet journaling.
And no, you don’t have to be an artist or have perfectly scripted handwriting to make it work for you (I promise!).
Let me share why this simple practice has been such a lifesaver.
1. Clearing the Mental Clutter

You know that feeling when your brain is juggling a million things at once? “Pick up diapers, schedule doctor’s appointment, don’t forget the laundry!”
It’s exhausting.
Bullet journaling helps me get all those thoughts out of my head and onto paper. Once it’s written down, my mind feels so much lighter.
It’s like decluttering my brain – and as someone who’s into decluttering binders, I’m all about that!
Writing things down also helps me prioritize. When everything is swirling around in my head, it all feels equally urgent. But when I see it on paper, I can figure out what truly needs my attention first.
It’s like sorting through a messy toy box and finding the one thing you actually need.
2. A Sense of Control in the Chaos

Let’s be real: life with little kids is unpredictable. One minute, everyone’s giggling, and the next, there’s a crayon mural on the wall.
My bullet journal gives me a small slice of control amidst the chaos. I can jot down my plans for the day, even if they’re as simple as “Fold laundry” or “Make it to bedtime.”
Crossing off those tasks? Pure satisfaction!
Even when things don’t go as planned (because let’s face it, that’s most days), having a plan helps me feel grounded. It’s a reminder that I’m doing my best, even if everything doesn’t get done.
And on the really hard days, just the act of writing down, “Survive today” feels like an accomplishment.
3. A Moment for Me

As moms, we often put ourselves last. But sitting down with my bullet journal is a little act of self-care. It’s my chance to pause, reflect, and check in with myself.
Sometimes I use it to track my mood or write a quick gratitude list. It doesn’t have to take long, but it’s my way of saying, “Hey, you matter too.”
This “me time” also gives me something to look forward to. At the end of a long day, once the kids are asleep, I light a candle, grab a cup of hot choco, and open my journal.
Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, it’s a moment to breathe and recharge.
4. Boosting Creativity (Even When You’re Not Feeling Creative)

You don’t need to be a Pinterest-perfect artist to enjoy bullet journaling.
Some days, I’ll doodle little flowers or boxes; other days, it’s just plain lists. But even the act of picking out fun colors or designing a simple layout feels like a creative outlet.
On days when I’m feeling especially inspired, I’ll experiment with new layouts or try my hand at lettering. Other days, I keep it simple with black ink and straight lines.
The beauty of bullet journaling is that it adapts to how you’re feeling. It’s not about perfection – it’s about expression.
5. Tracking What Matters

From milestones (like my baby’s first steps!) to habits I’m working on (drinking more water, anyone?), my bullet journal helps me track what’s important.
I’ve even started a “memory log” where I write down the cute things my kids say or do. It’s such a joy to look back and see how much we’ve grown as a family!
Tracking habits has also been a game-changer for my mental and physical health. I’ve created simple trackers for things like exercise, water intake, and sleep.
Seeing those little boxes fill up over time motivates me to keep going. And when I have an off day (or week), it’s a gentle reminder to start fresh.
6. Processing Emotions

Let’s face it: motherhood is an emotional rollercoaster. Some days, you’re overflowing with love; other days, you’re just plain overwhelmed.
Writing in my bullet journal helps me process those feelings. It’s like having a judgment-free space where I can be honest and let it all out.
Sometimes, I’ll write a few sentences about what’s on my mind. Other times, I’ll do a full brain dump and just let the words flow.
It’s amazing how much lighter I feel afterward. And when I look back at those entries later, I can see how far I’ve come.
7. A Simple, Flexible Tool

The best part? Bullet journaling is whatever you need it to be. There’s no right or wrong way to do it.
Some weeks, you can be super detailed with trackers and layouts; other weeks, it can be just a messy brain dump. And that’s okay!
Again, it’s not about perfection. It’s about showing up for yourself.
One thing I’ve learned is to keep it simple. When I first started, I felt like I had to create these elaborate spreads with fancy headers and decorations. But over time, I realized that a basic list works just as well (and takes way less time).
The key is finding what works for you.
8. Teaching Mindfulness

Bullet journaling has also taught me to be more mindful. By reflecting on my day or setting intentions for the week, I’ve become more aware of how I spend my time and energy.
It has helped me notice the small moments of joy that I might have otherwise overlooked, like my toddler’s belly laugh or the way the baby’s hand curls around mine.
Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as jotting down three things I’m grateful for or taking a moment to breathe before I start writing.
These small practices add up and make a big difference.
9. Improving Focus and Productivity

As a mom, multitasking is a way of life, but it often leaves me feeling scattered. Bullet journaling helps me slow down and focus on one thing at a time.
By planning my day and breaking tasks into manageable steps, I can actually get more done without feeling overwhelmed. It’s like having a roadmap for my day, guiding me through the chaos.
When I have my priorities laid out in front of me, it’s easier to stay on track. And on those days when interruptions are inevitable, my journal helps me pick up where I left off without missing a beat.
10. Encouraging Personal Growth

One of the unexpected joys of bullet journaling is how it’s helped me grow as a person. I use it to set small, achievable goals – whether it’s reading a book, learning a new skill, or simply being more patient with my kids.
Writing these goals down makes them feel real and attainable.
I also love using my journal to reflect on what’s working in my life and what isn’t. It’s a space where I can dream, plan, and challenge myself to be better. Over time, I’ve seen how these small steps add up to meaningful progress.
Give bullet journaling a try!
If you’ve ever felt like life is spinning too fast or like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, I encourage you to give bullet journaling a try. Start with a notebook and a pen.
Write down whatever’s on your mind. And remember: this is your space, your time, and your journey.
You’ve got this, mama!
