Keeping a rustic-styled home organized is indeed a challenge when you have kids. Actually, keeping the house organized is a challenge when you have kids, no matter the style.
But there are certain ways we can do to help organizing a little bit easier. And this post is all about farmhouse style – my favorite!
So here are cozy and practical organization hacks that blend beautifully with your farmhouse decor.
Think about warm wood tones, vintage baskets, cozy corners… that’s the idea.
Now let’s get on with it!
1. Use wooden crates for open storage.
For a rustic home storage, farmhouse crates never fail. You can use them to organize the entryway, keep your kids’ books, and even hold pantry items.
What I like about this is that wooden crates don’t need covers, just open storage. They’re also stackable and easy to label.
Now here’s an organization idea you can copy for your kids’ books and toys. Look at that. It’s adorable!
And then, you can do the same for the pantry. Mount those crates on the wall and you have just turned a dead vertical space into something precious – a place to hold your stock of food.
Then in the entryway, or if you have a mudroom, wooden cates are perfect for organizing shoes and even books and other stuff.
Now because of its open storage potential, wooden crates are perfect places also for holding decorations either inside or just a little outside your home.
2. Repurpose galvanized bins or buckets for mudrooms and laundry areas.
Galvanized bins have a vintage yet functional look making them perfect for rustic farmhouse organization. Use these to store shoes, towels and clothespins.
Here’s a mudroom using galvanized bins. And yes, it’s perfect to organize those stray shoes, keep them hidden from plain sight, all the while having that rustic farmhouse aesthetic.
You may also use a galvanized bucket for holding towels and blankets. Just keep them in a corner like this.
Also add labels for that farm cottage aesthetic. Oh, you’re going to love it! And I must say labels make a lot of difference when you’re trying so hard to organize with kids.
3. Style open shelves with mason jars and woven baskets.
This is so perfect for a rustic pantry setup and for the kitchen too. Using baskets, you can easily organize things into categories like baking or snacks. Then you can use mason jars for spices and other food supplies.
Take a look at this one. Don’t you just love that woven basket with the rolling pin? I do love that! Believe me, that’s in my wish list now.
Even a small farmhouse kitchen thrives with baskets. It’s a space saver actually, especially when you use it to help maximize the shelves.
Here’s a pantry with a stock full of food supplies in mason jars. And using open baskets too! Don’t you just love how organized this is? And those food in mason jars, feels so natural.

You can also use mason jars in the bathroom for your bathing supplies. It gives you the cozy farmhouse bathroom feel while staying organized.
Here’s another interesting way to use a woven basket – use for decorating for that cozy rustic farmhouse aesthetic- stuff it with lots of fresh flowers! This is so adorable, don’t you think?
4. Create a peg rail wall for multi-purpose hanging.
Inspired by the Shaker design, this is both simple and functional, making organization easier. Use it to hang bags, baskets, towels, accessories and even dried herbs. Fits a lot for a rustic farmhouse aesthetic!
Here’s one in the bathroom.
And here’s another in the laundry room. Use it to hang cleaning materials, coats, decorative plants. Indeed very simple… so easy.
This works great in the mudroom too and in the entryway for hanging coats and bags. Take a look at this. With those woven baskets underneath, it definitely feels like rustic farmhouse!
5. Convert an old ladder into a vertical shelf.
If you can find a rustic ladder shelf, this will add vertical storage without needing wall-mounts. And this works pretty good in a small space farmhouse style home.
It works as a really nice bookshelf for a rustic farmhouse style. I love this one! It holds lots of books – organized so well. Just don’t beat yourself up if you can’t have it this organized when kids are around. That’s pretty normal!
You can use a ladder shelf to organize craft supplies or office supplies too, like this. Nice arrangement!
And you can have one for hanging blankets and sweaters too.

6. Use chalkboard or kraft paper roll for ongoing lists.
This is great for the kitchen, in the hallway, entryway or in your command center. It adds a rustic, lived-in charm. With a chalkboard or kraft paper, you can keep track of grocery lists, pantry inventory, cleaning checklist and family reminders.
And I must say, it pairs well with rustic farmhouse organization!
Take a look at these two command centers – well organized and just family, with the rustic farmhouse vibe.
Here’s another in the entryway – a spring bucket list. What do you say? I love everything in this list, just not the egg hunt. But I would love egg hunting from the chicken and duck coop every morning (haha).
Now here’s using kraft paper for grocery lists.
You don’t have to stop at grocery lists though. You may also use this for cleaning list, inventory, family schedule like if kids have practice or if you have an appointment. Pair with a chalkboard calendar. You got the idea?
7. Add wicker or wire baskets.
Baskets instantly hide clutter in plain sight. And it makes organizing easier when you have kids. You literally just toss things inside the baskets. Yup! That’s it when you’re busy. Do the sorting later.
You can assign a basket for each family member. Then line your baskets with linen fabric for a softer farmhouse touch.
Commonly used in the pantry, wicker and wire baskets allow you to easily categorize food items. Add labels of course especially for the wicker baskets, so you know what’s inside. It’s also easier to put supplies back or restock when you have labels. You know where each one goes.
You can also use these baskets for toys and other stuff in your bedroom or the kids’ rooms.
And here’s using wire baskets in the bathroom – perfect for cleaning supplies.
Additionally, you can have a portable wire basket in the living room, carrying books you’re reading at the moment, with all your notes and something that makes you smile – like a flower in a small vase.

Bring your farmhouse to life!
Organizing feels hard when you have kids, and you just lack the time that you used to have when they weren’t there yet. But with a few tweaks, you can make it one day at a time.
And yes, organizing can still look beautiful and warm like the rustic farmhouse aesthetic. You don’t need to do all these at once. Just start with one idea this weekend.
