When my first-born son was around two years old, I was always looking for simple, screen-free activities that could keep him engaged while still helping him learn.
His aunt had given him then a very simple puzzle and I’ve watched him play it many times. That’s how I knew he liked puzzles.
So, my first choice when it comes to an educational toy for him is a puzzle. I knew he would love it.
Another thing is that I wanted him to learn about animals, specifically farm animals because our life’s direction would be towards homesteading later on. So, I wanted him to start loving animals from an early age.

It has big, easy-to-hold pieces. Actually, this is also my mom’s favorite puzzle because it’s big and she says it’s easy to see things especially for someone like her whose eyes are not that good anymore. My son would often play with her, and she had no problem playing this puzzle with him.
And because the pieces are big, it’s perfect for little hands that are still learning how puzzles work.
Cardboard is also thick so it’s durable and easier for small hands to pick up and grip.
The farm animals in this puzzle also look bright and colorful, so yes, my son loves it! And they’re still good even after two years of constant use.
It’s also large when assembled, so definitely great for floor play! When my son was two years old, he would lie down to it every time we completed it.
How My Son Used It (From Age 2 to Almost 5)
One of the things I love most about this puzzle is that it grew with my child.
At 2 years old
He definitely couldn’t complete it on his own yet.
But he loved looking at the animals and he learned to identify each of them. He also carried the pieces around and tried to fit them in, with our help of course.
At this stage, it was more about exploring and learning, not finishing.
Around 3–4 years old
This is when I really saw the difference.
He started to recognize where pieces go. He can already complete sections of the puzzle. And he was so eager to complete everything! And he now knew all the animals, and even the vegetables at this time.
It actually became more of a learning activity, not just play.
Now (almost 5 years old)
He can now complete the farm puzzle much faster. And he can do it on his own now.
Of course, I’m still there because my son likes it better when he’s not playing alone.
He also counts the pieces before playing, making sure that no puzzle piece is missing before he plays. So, he also learns counting through it.
Another thing that happens now is that he uses the farm puzzle as part of his pretend play. He has these little animal pieces and he likes to place them on the puzzle, saying they have a “meeting”.
I just love watching him! And he makes the animals “talk” to each other.
So yes, even now, it’s still useful. And it has become part of a bigger play, not just a puzzle.
