How to Declutter Your Pantry in 15 Minutes a Day

No more expired food, messy shelves, or lost ingredients! This simple step-by-step plan will help you declutter your pantry without spending hours on it.

How to Declutter Your Pantry in 15 Minutes a Day

Let’s be honest: the pantry can be a scary place.

It starts out organized, but before you know it, there are half-empty pasta boxes stacked precariously, forgotten spice jars from who-knows-when, and a bag of flour that somehow exploded everywhere.

If you’re like me, a homemaker juggling kids, meals, and lots of chores, you don’t have hours to spend tackling it all at once.

That’s why I’ve broken down pantry decluttering into a super simple, step by step plan. And if you feel like you’re constantly competing with time, spend only 15 minutes a day to declutter your pantry. Do what you can in those 15 minutes.

You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish with just a small, consistent effort!

So, snap a photo of your pantry, set your timer, and let’s get started!

Step 1: Take a quick inventory.

Before we start tossing things, let’s take stock. Do a quick scan of your pantry.

Make mental (or written) notes of expired items, duplicates, and things you haven’t used in ages. This will help you focus when it’s time to declutter in the next steps.

Step 2: Toss the expired stuff.

Grab a trash bag and get rid of anything past its expiration date. Check spices, canned goods, and dry items.

If something is close to expiring but still usable, plan to use it soon.

Step 3: Purge the “never-going-to-eat-it” items.

We all have those impulse buys – exotic sauces, strange grains, or that gluten-free something-or-other that nobody in the house actually likes.

If you haven’t used it in months (or years), donate it to a food bank if it’s still good.

Step 4: Consolidate and combine.

Half-empty bags of rice? Multiple open boxes of pasta?

Now’s the time to combine them!

Use clear containers if you have them or simply consolidate items into one package to save space and reduce clutter.

Step 5: Declutter & organize specific pantry items.

Spend time for these specific items in your pantry. You can dedicate as much as 15 minutes for each if needed.

Declutter snacks and cereals.

Cereal boxes and snack bags seem to multiply overnight. Toss stale items and organize the rest so they’re easy to grab. Consider using bins or baskets to keep things tidy.

Organize baking and cooking supplies.

If you bake, you probably have bags of flour, sugar, and baking powder taking up space. Check expiration dates, store frequently used items in airtight containers, and create a “baking zone” in your pantry.

Also, go through small baking and cooking extras like vanilla extract, food coloring, and sprinkles as these tiny items can take over. Toss anything expired and group similar items together.

Tidy up canned goods.

Arrange cans by category (soups, beans, vegetables, etc.) and put the soonest-to-expire ones in front so you’ll use them first. Say goodbye to any dented or expired cans.

Sort condiments and sauces.

Do you have five different kinds of hot sauce but only use one? Time to declutter!

Toss anything expired and group similar items together for easy access.

Organize grains and pasta.

Check bags and boxes of rice, quinoa, pasta, and other dry grains. Consolidate if needed and store them in clear containers if possible.

Declutter oils and vinegars.

Oils and vinegars can go rancid over time. Check expiration dates, wipe down sticky bottles, and organize them in one section of your pantry.

Make space for healthy foods.

As you clear space, set up a dedicated section for healthy staples – things like nuts, seeds, whole grains, and dried fruit.

When healthy choices are front and center, you’re more likely to reach for them.

Tidy up tea, coffee, and chocolate drinks.

Tea bags scattered everywhere? Coffee grounds taking over? Chocolate drink powders stacked messily?

Sort and store them neatly in a designated space.

Organize milk and dairy substitutes.

Check powdered and boxed milk, condensed milk, and other dairy substitutes. Make sure nothing is expired and store them neatly in an easy-to-reach spot.

Step 6: Do a quick final sweep.

Step back and admire your work! Do a final tidy-up, wipe down shelves, and make a mental note to keep things organized moving forward.

You don’t need to feel overwhelmed anymore when you declutter your pantry.

Again, by breaking it down into 15-minute daily tasks, you’ll gradually transform your space without feeling stressed.

Plus, a tidy pantry makes meal prep easier, saves money by reducing food waste, and brings a sense of order to your kitchen.

Keep up the habit, and you’ll enjoy a clutter-free pantry all year round!
