The Power of Decluttering
A cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind. When our surroundings are in disarray, it can contribute to stress, overwhelm, and decision fatigue.
But the good news is that you don’t have to overhaul your entire home to feel the benefits of decluttering.
Today, we’re going to choose one small area to tidy up – your purse, nightstand, or a kitchen drawer.
A small win in decluttering can give you a sense of calm and control, which is what this self-care journey is all about.
Why Decluttering Matters for Moms
As busy moms, we are constantly surrounded by “stuff.”
Toys, paperwork, snacks, and random odds and ends seem to pile up everywhere.
Decluttering a small space can:
- Give you a quick sense of accomplishment
- Reduce stress and visual clutter
- Make daily tasks easier and more efficient
- Encourage mindfulness and intentionality
- Inspire you to tackle other small areas over time
Step 1: Choose your small space.
To keep this challenge manageable, pick one small area to focus on today. Here are three great options:
1. Your purse or diaper bag

A mom’s bag often turns into a mini survival kit – filled with snacks, receipts, tissues, and random items we didn’t even know were in there.
Take a few minutes to:
- Empty everything out.
- Toss trash, old receipts, and expired coupons.
- Remove unnecessary items that don’t belong.
- Restock with essentials (wallet, keys, a pen, a small snack, etc.).
- Use small pouches or zip bags to keep things organized.
2. Your nightstand

Your bedside table should be a peaceful space, but it often collects books, water bottles, phone chargers, and random clutter.
Try this:
- Remove everything from the nightstand.
- Toss or relocate items that don’t belong.
- Wipe down the surface for a fresh, clean feel.
- Keep only the essentials: a lamp, book, journal, or a calming essential oil.

3. A Kitchen Drawer

The “junk drawer” is a common spot for clutter – pens, batteries, receipts, rubber bands, and who-knows-what.
Set a timer for 15 minutes and:
- Empty the drawer.
- Toss broken or unnecessary items.
- Group like items together (pens with pens, tools with tools).
- Use small dividers or trays to maintain organization.
- Keep only what you truly need.

Step 2: Enjoy the instant refresh.
Once you’ve decluttered your chosen space, take a deep breath and enjoy the sense of relief!
Even this one small step can make a big difference in how you feel.
A clutter-free space creates a more peaceful environment, making it easier to focus and relax.
Step 3: Keep it simple going forward.
To maintain this small win, try these quick tips:
Do a 2-minute daily reset – Take two minutes each day to put things back in their place.
Adopt a “one in, one out” rule – If you bring in something new, remove something old.
Use small organizers – Little bins, trays, or pouches can keep things from getting messy again.
Declutter on the go – If you notice something out of place, take a second to deal with it instead of waiting.
Your Challenge for Today
Pick one small space to declutter – your purse, nightstand, or a kitchen drawer – and tidy it up. Set a timer for 15 minutes and see what a difference it makes!
