How to Declutter Your Bathroom Countertop

Bathroom countertops have a sneaky way of turning into clutter central. Between the toothpaste tubes, hair ties, half-used lotions, and that one eyeshadow palette you swear you’ll use someday, it can feel like the mess just multiplies overnight.

But don’t worry, I’ve got you!

We’re going to declutter that bathroom countertop chaos together, and the best part? You only need 15 minutes a day.

I know you’re busy – I am too! Between homeschooling, playing with my toddler, taking care of my baby, and keeping up with household chores, the last thing I want to do is spend hours organizing.

That’s why I love breaking tasks into bite-sized pieces.

So, get your phone and snap a photo of your countertop. Then set your timer to 15 minutes. And do only what you can in 15 minutes. Unless of course, if you have more time, then use that to continue decluttering.

Alright, let’s get started!

Step 1: Clear it off.

We’re starting fresh! Set a timer for 15 minutes and remove everything from your countertop.

Yep, everything.

Then, lay it all out on a towel or a nearby surface. You might be surprised at how much has accumulated!

Don’t overthink where things will go just yet – we’ll get to that soon. For now, just admire that clean, blank space.

Step 2: Remove trash & expired items.

Grab a trash bag and sort through your items. Toss anything that’s empty, expired, or just not useful anymore.

That lotion bottle you’ve had since last year but never really liked? Let it go!

Makeup past its prime? Say goodbye!

If you haven’t used it in months, chances are, you won’t miss it.

Step 3: Group like items.

Now, let’s bring some order to the madness. Sort everything into categories – skincare, hair products, dental care, makeup, and miscellaneous.

This simple step makes it easier to see what you actually have (and what you might have way too much of!).

Step 4: Keep only the essentials on the counter.

Time to get picky! What do you use every single day?

These are the only things that should stay on your countertop.

For me, that’s my toothbrush, hand soap, a moisturizer, and a small tray with my bath soap and shampoo.

Everything else? It’s getting a new home!

Step 5: Find homes for the rest.

Take a few minutes to find proper places for the items that don’t belong on the counter.

Maybe under the sink, in a drawer, or in a small organizer on a shelf. If space is tight, consider using clear bins or dividers to keep things tidy.

Step 6: Wipe down & refresh.

Now that you have fewer items on your countertop, give it a good wipe-down. A quick clean can make your bathroom feel instantly fresher!

If you’re feeling fancy, add a small decorative touch – maybe a tiny plant, a candle, or a cute soap dispenser.

Step 7: Contain the chaos.

A simple tray or small basket can do wonders for keeping things neat. Instead of random items scattered across the counter, corral them in one designated spot.

This makes it easy to maintain order (and looks so much better!).

Now that you have a clear countertop, it’s time to focus on specific items that often end up on your bathroom counters. Take 15 minutes to tackle each one of these:

Hair accessories – If you have hair ties, clips, and brushes all over the place, sort through them. Keep the ones you actually use and find a small container to store them neatly.

Makeup clutter – Time to tackle that makeup stash! Get rid of anything old or rarely used. Consider using a small makeup organizer or a simple drawer divider to keep things tidy.

Skincare products – If your bathroom counter is overflowing with skincare items, pare it down. Keep only the products you use daily within reach and store the rest neatly in a cabinet or drawer.

Dental Care Items – Toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash – these essentials tend to clutter up space. A small cup or wall-mounted holder can help keep them organized and off the counter.

Keeping the Bathroom Counter Free from Clutter

You did it! Your bathroom countertop is now clean, organized, and stress-free. But let’s keep it that way!

Use vertical space.

If you’re short on counter space, consider adding a small shelf or wall-mounted organizer. Even a simple adhesive hook for hanging hair tools can make a big difference!

Create a quick morning routine spot.

Set up a tiny morning routine station with just the essentials – maybe your go-to moisturizer, deodorant, and a small mirror. Keeping everything in one place saves time and keeps clutter at bay.

Establish a maintenance routine.

Make it a habit to do a quick declutter every evening – just a minute or two to put things back where they belong. It’ll make a huge difference.

Bonus Tip: Keep It Simple!

The less you have out, the easier it is to keep your space neat. Challenge yourself to keep only the absolute essentials on your countertop and store everything else out of sight.
