My diaper bag used to be a bottomless pit of chaos.
Old receipts, half-eaten crackers, tiny, mismatched socks, and about a dozen mystery items would pile up until I couldn’t find the one thing I actually needed – like a hat for my little one or an alcohol.
If you’ve ever felt personally victimized by your overstuffed diaper bag, trust me, you are not alone!
But here’s the good news: You can declutter your diaper bag and keep it organized without feeling like you’re constantly fighting a losing battle.
As a homemaker and mom of two little ones, I’m learning a system that works, and I’m here to share it with you. Let’s do this together!
Step 1: Dump everything out.

Yes, everything. Take a deep breath and just go for it!
Turn your diaper bag upside down and empty it onto a clean surface.
You might be surprised (or horrified) by what you find. Crumbled tissues, receipts from three months ago, a sippy cup you thought you lost, oh, and probably a few stray Cheerios!
This step is essential because you need to start with a clean slate. Once everything is out, give the bag a quick wipe-down, inside and out.
If it’s machine washable, even better! Toss it in the wash while you sort through the contents.
Step 2: Sort and categorize.

Now that you have everything laid out, it’s time to categorize:
Absolute Essentials: Diapers, wipes, a changing pad, an extra outfit, and bottles or snacks if needed.
Nice-to-Haves: Pacifiers, burp cloths, hand sanitizer, a small toy or book.
Unnecessary Extras: Old receipts, expired coupons, broken toys, and anything that has been sitting in there unused for weeks.
Toss the trash immediately. If you have items that belong elsewhere (like that missing sock), put them back in their proper place.
Step 3: Create a mini-organization system.
Now that you know what really needs to be in your diaper bag, let’s make it easier to find things.
Here’s how:
Use pouches or ziplock bags.

Instead of letting everything float freely inside your bag, try using small pouches or clear ziplock bags to keep similar items together. For example:
Diapering Kit: Diapers, wipes, changing pad, diaper cream.
Feeding Kit: Bib, spoon, snacks, bottles, formula.
Mom Essentials: Wallet, keys, lip balm, hand sanitizer, a small notebook.
Emergency Kit: Band-aids, travel-size baby lotion, extra pacifier, small garbage bags.
This way, when you need something, you’re not frantically digging through an abyss of baby gear!
Limit the number of each item.
One of my biggest mistakes was carrying way too many diapers and outfits “just in case.”
Realistically, 3-4 diapers and one or two extra outfit should be plenty for an average outing. If you’ll be out all day, you can always stash extras in the car.
Step 4: Make it a habit.

A decluttered diaper bag is wonderful, but only if it stays that way. So, here’s how to maintain it:
Do a quick clean-out every night. Before bed, take 2 minutes to remove trash, replace used items, and restock essentials.
Keep a small stash in the car. Always keep a backup diaper kit in the car in case you forget something. That way, you won’t feel the need to overstuff your diaper bag.
Stick to your categories. Every time you add something new to the bag, ask yourself if it really belongs. If not, don’t let it sneak in!
The Magic of a Clutter-Free Diaper Bag
Let me tell you – the first time I reached into my organized diaper bag and found exactly what I needed in two seconds, I felt like I had unlocked some sort of mom superpower.
No more stress, no more digging, no more frustration. Just calm, confident diaper changes and snack breaks.
So, mama, if you’re tired of feeling like your diaper bag is working against you, take a little time today to declutter and reset. I promise, it’ll make your life so much easier!
Now what’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever found in your diaper bag? Let me know in the comments or in email, I’d love to hear your stories!
Happy organizing!
